KidneyDialysis We currently have around 85 patients who are facing renal problems. For these, we completely support totally around 350 dialysis procedures per month. Over time, this has become the prime area with a huge requirement. Dialysis is a temporary, but regular treatment that patients who have renal failure need to undergo. Typically, patients require 8-12 dialysis procedures per month depending on the severity of the problem. The cost of each dialysis on an average works out to be Rs 650/- (For PRAY referrels) to Rs. 1,000/-. In addition to this expense they require a minimum of two units of blood/month costing Rs.1,000/- and investigation and medicines Rs.1000/- to Rs 1500/-. Out of the total requirement of Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 dialysis per month per patient, we are currently able to give Rs 3,000 to them, which is adequate only for 20% of their needs. For the remaining dialysis, the patients are forced to depend on other organizations or raise money on their own. Thus, we are only providing minimal funding as we are constrained by acute lack of money to spend in this area. During dialysis, the patient becomes weak and unable to lead a normal life. He/She also loses livelihood and earning capacity as he/she is unable to participate in any productive activity regularly.
Transplant & post-operative medicines Typically, renal transplant is an option to cure the patients facing. However, the problems are finding an appropriate donor and also the high cost involved. A typical renal transplant costs Rs 2 to 2.5 lakhs. The amount PRAY directly gives in such cases is usually Rs 25,000/-, which amounts to around 10% of the total patient requirement. However, we also help the patient to facilitate funds from the PM relief (usually Rs. 30,000/-), CM Relief fund (usually Rs. 10,000/-) and Mayor relief fund (usually Rs. 10,000/-). This just includes the cross match test and surgery, not the cost of the kidney itself. However, even in this case, the post-renal transplant care is very expensive. The total cost (including cyclosporine) works out to around Rs 15,000/- per month initially which is very heavy on the poor patients (Please click here to read the case of 11 year old Rumaina, a deaf and dumb girl recovering from renal transplant. Even in providing cyclosporine, we are able to get a good discount and it costs us Rs 3,250/- for a packet of 50 capsules of 50 mg which cost around Rs 4,000/- in the market.
What have we done so far? Till date (end of September 2006), we have been able to assist 299 patients to the amount of Rs 43,10,658/- towards dialysis and operations. We have also spent around Rs 14,80,982/- to 53 patients providing them post-operative medicines. Some of these patients are as young as 16 years. Our current monthly spending on renal care is estimated to be around Rs 1.5 lakhs. As shown above, we are still in critical need of a large amount of funds to fully support our existing patients. We request you to donate your money to help these patients. For more details on how you can help, please click here. We are also planning a major initiative to help our patients reduce the costs of dialysis. For more details regarding this, please click here.
